STEM CELLS & PRP (PLATELET RICH PLASMA)
STEM CELL & PRP THERAPY
WHAT IS A STEM CELL?
A stem cell is an undifferentiated cell, meaning that it can either differentiate into a specialized cell, or it can divide into more stem cells through mitosis. There are two kinds of stem cells in human beings. The first ones are called adult stem cells, which can be found in various tissues. In adults, these cells repair the body and replenish tissue. The other type of stem cells are the embryonic stem cells; these cells are found in the blastocyst. They start to form five days after the initial fertilization of the egg.
There are three places from which a doctor can acquire adult stem cells:
Adipose Tissue; extracted through liposuction.
Blood; drawing blood and extracting out the stem cells by running the blood through a centrifuge.
Bone Marrow; done by drilling into the bone.
WHAT IS PLATELET RICH PLASMA (PRP)?
A platelet is a blood clot cell which travels to a wound to help the healing process. These cells also help recruit stem cells. Platelet Rich Plasma refers to plasma which has a high density of these blood clotting cells. It is acquired first by drawing the patient’s blood. This blood is then run through a centrifuge (it is spun very fast). This separates out different layers of things within the blood by their densities, meaning the platelets gather up into a layer as well, so the doctor can extract the volume of blood which has a high density of platelets.
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL PRP PROCEDURE LOOK LIKE?
Typically, a PRP procedure would need to begin with the extraction of the PRP. This means that drawing a small amount of blood from the patient is typically the first step. That blood is then run through a centrifuge to extract the PRP. Then, based on the type of procedure, the PRP may or may not be combined with a variety of solutions. It is then injected into the required area based on the procedure performed and the results which are desired. A standard PRP treatment is an outpatient procedure, meaning that you do not have to be admitted to a hospital to undergo these therapies. If you wish to have a PRP procedure performed in Clearwater, Florida, then the Grossgold Clinic is the place for you. We offer a variety of PRP treatments and many of them can be completed in as little as ten to 15 minutes.
